How to Convert a QIF Bank File to QBO for QuickBooks
October 27, 2026 ยท Mirza Arham

QIF is a line-based transaction format used by older finance tools. A QBO file is a Web Connect bank-feed format. Converting changes how transactions are packaged; it cannot fix a missing date, a duplicate payment, or an incorrect amount in the source file.
Check the QIF source
Keep an untouched copy of the original. Confirm the statement period, transaction count, and whether withdrawals are negative. QIF dates can be ambiguous: 04/05/26 could mean April 5 or May 4. Compare the preview with your bank statement before exporting.
Convert in the browser
- Open the QIF-to-QBO converter and select your .qif file.
- Review the transaction preview, focusing on dates, amounts, and descriptions.
- Choose Convert & Download QBO.
- Enter the institution, routing, and account details requested by the exporter. Use details for the account represented by the file.
- Save the QBO and try importing it into the intended QuickBooks edition.
What carries over?
The converter reads QIF transaction dates, descriptions, amounts, check numbers, categories, and memos. Category and memo text are folded into the generated description for context; do not expect them to become automatically categorized QuickBooks accounts.
If QuickBooks rejects the file
- Check that your QuickBooks version accepts Web Connect files.
- Confirm that the institution and account identifiers match the account you are importing into.
- Check for invalid or ambiguous dates and empty amounts.
- Prefer a bank-issued QBO file when one is available.
